Summer Schedule 2011
Narnia Club
Tuesday - Friday, June 7-19
3:00 - 5:00 PM
At the Pearl Lane Ministry Center
Focus:
- Introduce 3rd-6th graders to the Chronicles of Narnia & the historical setting
- Encourage reading & exploration
- Offer enrichment & educational activities through story-telling, viewing of the movies, & crafts
- Discuss the Biblical analogies found in all of the books, both in the characters and themes
Needs:
- 1 or 2 people to lead crafts
- 1 person to lead with the games
Schedule:
- 3-3:30 gather, free time to review books & related material
- 3:30-4:00 storytelling, review of material, question/answer time
- 4:00-4:30 craft for some; games for others; lemonade & chips served
- 4:30-5:00 craft for some; games for others; lemonade & chips served
Tutoring at the Pearl Lane Ministry Center
Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday evenings
5:00 - 7:00 PM
June 14 - 30 and July 12 - 21 (a total of 5 weeks)
Work in 30 minute sessions with students in reading and math
Goal: increase reading comprehension & vocabulary; memorize addition & multiplication facts; review "math fact families;" and review math from previous school year
- Concentrate on various fiction & non-fiction books
- Discuss the material read with a tutor
- Work with a tutor on math facts & in demonstrating his/her ability to complete math various problems; for some of the younger students, learn "touch math"
- Complete worksheets with a tutor on vocabulary words
Needs:
- People to volunteer to work with assigned students for 30 minutes covering material
- Volunteers to tutor for 1 or 2 hours one or more days per week for 2 to 5 weeks
Lord of the Rings Club
Tuesday - Friday, July 26 - 29
3:00 - 5:00 PM
At the Pearl Lane Ministry Center
Focus:
- Introduce the books to 8th-12th grade students
- Discuss the 1st book of the trilogy
- Discuss the historical setting, themes, etc.
- Offer enrichment & educational activities to compliment books
Needs:
- 1 or 2 assistants to lead in introduction of the books and discussion of themes,etc.
- 1 or 2 people to lead in crafts

English Teacher
Current schedule:
- Sundays at 1:00 PM for Spanish speakers at Shallowford Garden Apts; 1:30 PM for Chinese speakers at Pearl Lane Ministry Center; 5:00 PM for Spanish speakers at Pearl Lane Ministry Center -- additional teachers are needed to break the classes into beginners, intermediate, and advanced.
- Mondays at 5:30 PM for Spanish speakers at Pearl Lane Ministry Center -- additional teachers are needed to break the classes into beginners, intermediate, and advanced.
- Tuesdays at 10:00 AM for mothers who are Spanish speakers
- Additional requested times: weekday mornings, especially Thursday or Friday; Wednesday or Thursday evening from 7:30 or 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Group Activities with the Children:
mini-VBS at the Pearl Lane Ministry Center on a weekday afternoon or Saturday.
Administration Assistance:
- At the center, filing, reorganization of supplies & books
- As we prepare for the children to return to school, we will be collecting, sorting & distributing school supplies -- help will be needed in late July.
- Office assistance, loading photos onto the website & Facebook, preparing for school enrollment
There are ongoing needs for people to assist, such as receiving food, clothing & other donations which have to be sorted & prepared for distribution.
